Over 8.3% of the global population suffers from type 2 diabetes, a disease that is expected to affect over 552 million people by 2030. Our group is focused on the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases and the identification of prevention strategies and treatment interventions that would help stem this epidemic.
Our primary focus is the carotid body, a peripheral chemoreceptor whose main stimulus is hypoxia. We have recently discovered that the carotid body also senses hyperinsulinemia, and have shown that carotid body overactivation is present in hypercaloric animal models of insulin resistance and hypertension. We have also found that carotid sinus nerve resection prevents the development of insulin resistance, hypertension and obesity induced by hypercaloric diets, suggesting that the carotid body is involved in the genesis of metabolic disturbances. We are now mapping carotid body neural pathways and disclosing the molecular mechanisms involved in the aetiology of insulin resistance and obesity.
Additionally, we have a second line of reasearch that intends to explore the benefitial/deleterious effects of chronic vs acute caffeine intake on insulin sensitivity and the mechanism underlying these effects. The mapping of neural pathways and the disclosure of the molecular mechanims involved in type 2 diabetes and related co-morbidities should reveal new targets for therapeutical intervention.
