European Researchers' Night is a science event open to the public that takes place every year at the same time in many European cities in various European cities on the last Friday of September. This year will occur on the night of September 27 in more than 300 cities simultaneously.

The main goal of the ERN is to bring researchers closer to the public. In these events, researchers will showcase the focus of their studies and highlight the impact of research on our daily lives. During this night every citizen is invited to celebrate and actively participate in Science.

Rita Teodoro and her team will participate in the activities held in Lisbon, particularly at National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) - consortium is coordinated by Universidade de Lisboa.

Ciência Viva no Laboratório – Criar Futuro’s internships program, gives students from the 9th to the 12th grade the opportunity to gain experience in a scientific laboratory setting by developing projects alongside researchers. On the 23rd edition of the Ciência Viva no Laboratório program, NMS | FCM offers not only internships in 3 different fields but also true laboratory learning experiences such as:

Bacterial infection: from suspicion to confirmation
On the internship on Bacterial Infection: from suspicion to confirmation, it is intended that the participants can be in contact with certain methodologies used in microbiology laboratories for clinical diagnosis and scientific investigation.
The activities will go from the preparation of culture media, followed by contact with bacterial cultures in solid media to the procedures for its conservation. Bacteriological agents that cause two of the most frequent pathologies in the Portuguese population will also be morphologically and biochemically identified: bacterial tonsillitis and urinary infections.

Laboratory of virology: from drawing to practice
This internship’s main goal is to be able to put the students in contact with some procedures used in the virology laboratory for clinical diagnosis and scientific research. The participants will begin by getting to know the procedures and safety aspects in the virology laboratory, namely, the working circuits, necessary equipment and good practices.
The activities to be carried out will include the preparation of culture media, contact with cell cultures and the procedures for their conservation, as well as some techniques used to visualize the results. It will also be addressed a molecular biology strand, where extractions of DNA or RNA from samples will be performed. Afterwards, qualitative analyzes will be performed and the results will be analyzed through agarose gel electrophoresis. In the samples with positive results, the viral load will be determined by PCR in real time.

Discovering genetics using the Drosophila animal model
The students will have as a model organism, the one animal that is best known in the field of genetics: the "fruit fly". Here, hypotheses will be elaborated, going through the experimental design and, finally, analyze the results obtained. The intern’s main functions will be to accompany the researcher during the maintenance of the animals, to amplify the populations of this organism, to manipulate the animals in the magnifying glass, to select specific mutants, to carry out genetic crosses and to analyze the offspring of these same crossings.

Once again, NOVA Medical School|Faculdade de Ciências Médicas partnered up with Pavilhão do Conhecimento-Centro de Ciência Viva and British Council for the 10th edition of the FameLab in Portugal and together will organize one of the Lisbon FameLab'19 Qualifiers.

This event will occur on 2 February 2019 at Research Campus-NMS|FCM and the winners of this Qualifier will participate directly in the National Semi-Finals.

Each person has 3 minutes to show that can deliver a scientific message without using audiovisual materials to a non-scientific audience in an engaging way.

 
NMS|FCM-Pavilhão do Conhecimento Regional Qualifier is constituted by the following stages:
i. Online application with a 3' minutes video - until 27 January 2019. Apply here.
ii. Communication of the results to the candidates by e-mail - 28 January 2019;
iii. NMS|FCM-Pavilhão do Conhecimento Qualifier - 2 February 2019 at Research Campus - NMS|FCM.

 
The selected candidates will participate in one of the 2 national semi-finals (March 2019). The winners of the semi-finals will attend a Science Communication MasterClass (March/April 2019) and the National Final will occur on April/May 2019. The National winner will represent Portugal in the international semi-final at the Cheltenham Science Festival (4-9 June 2019, United Kingdom).

 
Anyone can participate as long as one has at least 18 years old and does not work in science communication.

With activities going from 18h to 00h, CEDOC-NMS|FCM participates with the activity “Exploring health in the city”, developed by MEDIR:Metabolic Disorders lab, in the room Reis da Europa Selvagem, floor 1.

The theme for the biennium 2018/2019 is “Science in the city” and aims to give answers to the main concerns of urban communities relating the global alterations predicted, highlighting the importance of science for the upkeep of quality of life and preservation of cultural heritage.
